I am always amazed at how often I am approached by friends, friends of friends, relatives, and long-lost acquaintances for insider information on how they should navigate the health care system for their or their family’s health issues.
The questions are varied: Which hospital is the best for eye issues? How can I get my mom into the right rehab hospital after her stroke? I have this bothersome rash but my dermatologist appointment isn’t for four months and I can’t wait any longer, what should I do?
You might wonder why so many people need to ask me these types of questions instead of getting the information from their family doctor. But the truth is that it’s often difficult to get an appointment with your doctor. What’s more, doctors are so often rushed that there can be inadequate time to inquire about some of the specifics before they move on to the next patient. I know when I am working in the emergency room, I often don’t have as much time as I wish I had to discuss all of my patients’ health details with them.
