Navigating the Saskatchewan Health Care System

By February 12, 2018 No Comments

Today, let’s take a high-level look at the Saskatchewan health care system. Saskatchewan offers a rich array of healthcare services available for you and your family, and with some basic orientation, you’ll be familiar with the landscape. Let Novus be your guide!

Administration

Healthcare in Saskatchewan is administered by the Ministry of Health. The ministry is responsible for overseeing the administration of healthcare services in the province in addition to developing healthcare policies and community programs, among other responsibilities.

Saskatchewan Health

Saskatchewan Health is the province’s public health insurance program, covering medically required services. To qualify for Saskatchewan Health, you must be a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant and reside in Saskatchewan for at least four months out of any given year, and obtain a valid health card. There are no premiums for Saskatchewan Health.

Like other provincial health insurance programs, Saskatchewan Health does not cover all services. Some notable exclusions include cosmetic procedures and services performed by private allied health professionals who are not under contract to a Saskatchewan district health board.

Saskatchewan Health coverage extends beyond Saskatchewan! Simply show your valid health card elsewhere in Canada, and your eligible medical costs will be billed back to Saskatchewan Health. Abroad, take note that Saskatchewan Health will only cover emergency services, and then only to the amount that it would pay for the same services in the province. As medical costs abroad can be significantly more expensive than in Canada, always medical travel insurance in mind!

Saskatchewan Drug Plan & Extended Benefits

Saskatchewan Health provides extended drug and health services coverage to eligible Saskatchewan residents based on need. In general, those over 65, on government income assistance, or afflicted with chronic disease or disabilities are eligible for coverage under one of the many drug plans available to Saskatchewan residents.

HealthLine

HealthLine is a nurse telephone advice and health information service available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. To access HealthLine, dial toll-free 811 within HealthLine, or visit this website.
