Background
Health conditions related to blood cholesterol affect a significant portion of Canadians. More than 2 out of 5 Canadians between the ages of 20 and 79 have unhealthy cholesterol levels. While your body needs a little cholesterol to work properly, too much cholesterol can block your arteries and lead to heart disease. According to the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation, diets high in saturated fats can increase “bad” cholesterol. Bad cholesterol is associated with plaque buildup in the arteries, which can lead to heart disease. However, consuming more healthy fats can lower bad cholesterol and reduce your risk of heart disease and stroke. Today, Novus will lay out an action plan to help you get your blood cholesterol under control.
Action Plan
As a first step, we believe understanding blood cholesterol is key. To this end, we recommend learning about the condition and how it affects your body. Once you have the background knowledge, the logical next step is to learn ways to reduce your total cholesterol through diet and physical activity. Finally, if you have any questions about your blood cholesterol, the best person to speak to would be your physician.
An excellent resource to leverage is the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, to learn more about getting your cholesterol in check and controlling cholesterol levels with your diet. Health Canada also provides general food guide tips that you may find helpful. Of course, here at Novus we have all the information you need to gain the best understanding of how blood cholesterol affects your health.
