While Prince Edward Island may be a refreshing sight for many Canadians, its healthcare system should be a familiar face. Most components of PEI’s healthcare system have direct parallels in other provinces. Administration
Healthcare in PEI is administered by the Prince Edward Island Department of Health. The department is responsible for overseeing health care services in the province in accordance with the Health Services Act, in addition to providing leadership in health and community services programs and policy development for the province.
The Medical Services Plan (MSP)
The Medical Services Plan (MSP) is PEI’s provincial health care plan, covering the cost of medically necessary services by doctors and surgeons. Hospital services are covered separately under the Hospital Services Plan (HSP). There are no premiums for coverage. In general, to be eligible you must be a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant and live in PEI for at least six months plus a day out of each calendar year.
If you are travelling outside of PEI, not to worry! MSP provides coverage everywhere in Canada for emergency care, as well as abroad. Simply show your health card for costs to be billed to MSP. Be aware that coverage outside of Canada is only provided up to the amount of equivalent service in Canada, or what is billed, whichever is less. As medical expenses outside of Canada can be significantly more expensive, you may be left with a large payment. When travelling abroad, always keep medical travel insurance in mind!
PEI Drug Programs
Various drug programs exist in PEI to assist in the purchase of medication and related medical supplies to residents who are over 65, receive provincial income assistance, reside in a long-term care facility, or are children in the care of the province, in addition to specific medical conditions that also qualify. A co-payment may be required depending on income level.
