Administration
Healthcare in Yukon is administered by Yukon Health and Social Services. Yukon Health is responsible for the general administration and oversight of issues related to health care in Yukon, in addition to general healthcare policy development.
The Yukon Health Care Insurance Plan (YHCIP)
The Yukon Health Care Insurance Plan (YHCIP) is Yukon’s provincial health care plan, providing residents of Yukon with coverage for most medical care delivered by doctors and at hospitals in Yukon. YHCIP does not charge any premiums. In general, to be eligible, you must be a Canadian or permanent resident who makes a permanent residence in Yukon and is present in the territory at least six months out of the calendar year.
YHCIP also covers healthcare in Canada even if you are travelling outside of Yukon, as long as you present your Yukon Health Card. Outside of Canada, you remain covered, but coverage is only provided up to the amount of equivalent service in Canada, or what is billed, whichever is less. As medical expenses outside of Canada can be significantly more expensive, you may end up with a large bill. When travelling abroad, always keep medical travel insurance in mind!
Pharmacare
Drug assistance is available to eligible individuals in Yukon. If you are a Yukon resident over 65 (or aged 60 and married to a Yukon resident who is at least 65 years of age) and eligible for YHCIP, you are eligible to receive 100% coverage of your prescription drug costs through the Pharmacare program.
Yukon HealthLine: 24/7 Medical Advice
Yukon HealthLine is a nurse telephone advice and health information service. This service is accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by dialing 811 within the territory.
Other Services
While Yukon’s healthcare system is sufficient to cover basic care, special procedures such as cancer care may require medical relocation to British Columbia. Fortunately, there are always contingencies in place in the event of such a need.
